Forest School at St Mary’s
Forest School is a chance for children to learn about nature and their environment in a fun and educational way. It allows all children to learn through hands-on experiences in an outdoor settings.
We have covered topics such as habitats, minibeasts, wildlife identification and nature artwork. Some of the skills we have also learnt include: knots, building shelters, making fires and cooking outdoors.
The KS1 children have opportunities to explore outdoor learning through their Science lessons. These include learning about the weather, the seasons, animals and plants in our school environment and how plants and animals grow and change. We collect data on the weather as it changes through the seasons, we explore the trees, and seeds in our grounds and we grow and nurture different plants, fruits and vegetables.
In KS2 the children have the opportunity to camp outdoors overnight. They prepare their own food and help to cook on an open fire. They try out new activities such as archery, shelter building, catapult making and wide games. There is also a residential experience where children stay for 2 nights and experience lots of exciting activities such as climbing and abseiling, they build fires and make s'mores, and they complete orienteering challenges.
