Living and Learning Together - Shining in our Faith

Inclusion and SEND

At St. Mary's we believe that all children have the right to a high quality education, where all children are supported and feel that they belong.

We operate an inclusive culture where everyone is welcomed and all staff and children respect each other.

We have policies and practices which respond to diversity and value everyone equally.

Our School environment is accessible to all through accessible parking spaces outside the school, wheelchair access and accessible toilet facilities.

We have a range of specialised equipment and resources available to ensure that all children are able to fully access the curriculum. Our reading scheme includes a range of books for children who have reading difficulties. Our handwriting policy teaches cursive handwriting and supports spelling throughout Key Stage 1 and 2. Within Teaching and Learning we have a specialised teacher who can deliver a range of interventions to meet the needs of individual children.

We complete half termly provision maps illustrating the support required across the school and also the resources needed. Staff receive regular training on SEN and one member of staff has completed the Dyslexia Awareness Course.

We have a team of staff who complete daily intervention to support additional needs on a 1:1 basis. This includes individual intervention programmes covering literacy, reading and numeracy also the Hickey Multi Sensory Package. We also deliver the Think Good Feel Good intervention, interventions to support memory and also the IDL computer intervention.

Within Class, support is given to individuals and also small groups of children. Planning and resources are created and adapted to support all needs.

The school liaises regularly with external agencies to support teaching and learning and the identification of individual needs. Children with additional needs have super targets set every 6 weeks. Each child is fully involved with their own super targets and all targets are discussed and reviewed with the teacher, teaching assistant, parent and child. Every 6 weeks an 'Open Hour' is held between SENCo and parents to discuss progress and answer any questions.

Communication with parents is paramount and a weekly school newsletter is sent to all parents. Each class sends a half-termly newsletter to all parents. An open door policy is in operation where parents can contact the Head/SENCo or teacher through email, telephone or make an appointment for a longer 1:1 session to discuss any issues.

We have an excellent relationship with the local secondary schools. We liaise with secondary schools to support each child's individual needs.

An individual transition programme is completed with each child which can include additional visits to their high school to support individual needs and concerns over transport to and from the school.
